Cincinnati Reds will try to continue their way of winning on Wednesday night when they will host Seattle Meriners in the second game of the three-market set.
On Tuesday, Reds extended the line of victory into four matches, all of them coming to the existing six-market homestand. Austin Hauz hit a Go-forward, three-run homer in the fifth innings and went in four runs, while Gavin Lux went to 4-for-4 in the 8–4 decision on Meriners.
This was the third time in the history of the franchise that a player scored four runs in his Cincinnati debut. Lux, meanwhile, matched a career with four hits and became the third reds player this season with four-hit games.
Reds spent the first 16 games of the season without several pieces, including Hazes (calf injury) and closure Alexis Diaz (Hamstrings). Matt McClane (Hamstring) missed only five games.
But on Tuesday, the three returned and played a role in Cincinnati’s victory.
Hayes was set to start the season as Cincinnati’s Cleanup Hitter, but the season opener suffered a calf injury three days ago and spent the first 16 games in the injured list before going for 2 -for -4 for Reds on Tuesday.
Reds manager Terry Frankona said of Hauz, “It doesn’t always work when a man comes back, but I think we remember him.”
“He can do harm in the middle of our lineup,” McClen said. “He is going to be a great player for us. We are all excited for him. I think we all saw it in spring, and we all know that he is really a good player. He is a person who needs a lineup, so it is good to bring him back.”
McClen returned from a 10-day term in the injured list, walking three times and scored twice.
Meanwhile, 2023 All-star closure Alexis Diaz returned from a hamstring injury, retiring two batsmen, but a pair went into the sixth.
Cincinnati was not the only team to celebrate new faces on Tuesday. Seattle’s third baseman Ben Williamson started his leading league, going to 1 -for -3 and made his first major league hit in his first Major League plate appearance in the second innings. He scored at Dylan Moore’s RBI single from Nick Lodolo.
Williamson said after Tuesday’s loss, “I am very refined to my approach with two strikes, trying to bring the ball deep as possible.” “And it just gave me a lot of confidence, knowing that even against the best weapons, I am still able to do the approach where I am able to dishonest hard pitches and try to see if I can find a good to hit.”
Williamson required tickets for 14 families and friends in appearance, including his parents, his younger league coaches, and a childhood friend.
The Reds will send the right-handed Nick Martinez (0-2, 6.06 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday, which will make the fourth beginning of the season. In his most recent beginning, last Wednesday, he was rolling with a 6–1 lead in the sixth innings. But San Francisco held rallies for four runs and then won a single run in the eighth before Mike Yestzmsky, 8-6 with a two-run homer in the 10th.
Martinez is 0-3 with 4.41 ERAs in the eight career performance and begins against five Seattle.
Meriners will counter right-handed Bryas Miller (0-2, 4.50 ERA), which will make their fourth beginning to Seattle. Miller will start his second career against Cincinnati. Miller initially allowed just one hit and one run in six innings and won.
