We like to exclude the opponent: Shubman Gill

Gujarat’s Titans captain Shubman Gill revealed that “the skill to exclude the opposition” is one that makes his batting partnership so effective with Sai Sudarshan. He said that “to assess the reading status and situation” that is why his side’s strategic awareness is important for his success in IPL 2025. As an opening pair in IPL 2025, reformson and Gill have scored 839 runs, on an average with 76.27, three out of three with seven 50-plus stands-three. The pair made the highest partnership for Gujarat Titans in T20 with their first wicket stand of 205 runs at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday, as GT booked its place in the playoffs with a 10 -wicket win over Delhi capitals.
“I think the way we bat is not the same at all, but the left-right helps. We walk very well between the two wickets, and we are the kind of players who like to exclude the opponent, including the bowlers,” Gill said in the Jean Bold episodes of Gehotstar.
“In T20 cricket, especially with the introduction of the impact player rule, the skill of excluding the opposition has declined slightly. But I think our team still does well. It is easy to swing freely on good cement wickets, but lies in the position of reading real skills, and continuously fighting – whatever that is, I believe that I believe.”
Gill reflected the team’s coherent success, and also credited the collective contribution to the departments, saying, “I think it has been a collective performance. The way everyone is coming together and contributing to all aspects – this is something that we have done well in the first three years, and I think this is continuing in this season.”
The skipper credited coach Ashish Nehra to shape the team’s identity and empower the bowling unit. “I think Ashish Nehra had a clear vision when the Titans of Gujarat came during the first year – he knew how he wanted to build the team and define the players’ roles. Their communication with the players, both on and out, has been excellent.
“There are always fields to improve, and the way he works with players personally, especially bowlers stand out. Many people believe that IPL is won by batsmen, but our ideology is different. It doesn’t matter how many runs you score if you can’t defend them. The way you can not defend them. He is a great strength to guide the bowling unit.”
Last year, after breaking a brilliant young woman international hundred in the second T20I against Zimbabwe, Abhishek Sharma revealed that he used the bat in the match of his childhood friend and under -19 team partner Gill, something she had done regularly in the past.
Gill signed by revealing a light backstory to use his bats from his U-16 days later. “It started back in our U -16 days. Abhishek started playing with my bat – there is a story behind it. He was batting for 80 or 90 runs using his match bat, and I didn’t want it to break, so I asked him to return it. We ended a little fight over him!
