R&A confirmed on Tuesday, it is searching for the possible return of Donald Trump’s Open Championship for Turnberry.

The Seized Course in South Irshire, Scotland has been owned by the US President since 2014.

Turnberry hosted Open four times, recently in 2009 when Stewart Sink defeated 59-year-old Tom Watson in a four-hall playoffs to win Claret Jug.

After the attack on US Capital by Trump supporters on 6 January 2021, R&A earlier said that it would not stage the championship there.

However, a potential return is higher than logistics than politics, according to Mark Darbon, Chief Executive Officer of R&A.

“In Turnberry, there are certainly some logical and business challenges that we encounter around the road, rail and housing infrastructure,” he told the British media. “We are doing some feasibility tasks that will require to return to the location and an investment that will be required.”

Darbon reported that “just 120,000 people” joined Open in Turnberry in 2009, compared to an anticipated crowd of about 280,000 for this July tournament in Royal Portrash in Northern Ireland.

Darbon said, “We know that golf course is fantastic, so at some point we would like to come back there.”

Turnberry hosted Open in 1977, 1986 and 1994.
