Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder Sunil Narin has a world-famous reputation to be an explosive hitter of the cricket ball. However, Western Indians faced embarrassment during the match against Punjab Kings (PBK) on Tuesday when he failed the customary bat check. The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has introduced random bat checks during the Games to prevent players from getting unfair advantage in sports. When Narin’s bat was examined as he was preparing to go out, it was found to break the acceptable limit.
A video of Narayan’s unsuccessful bat check has also surfaced on social media, which led to a big debate whether West Indian was beating the bowlers till the PBKS match using an ‘illegal bat’.

Another player, who failed in the bat check during the PBKS vs KKR match in Mulanpur, was the tail-dent Enark Nortze. In the final stages of the game, his bat was examined against Punjab before going out of the OT bat. The Nortze was informed about the shape range, and was forced to change the bat like a female.
The bats of some of the KKR batsmen were examined outside the field of sports by reserve umpire Syed Khalid. After being informed that his bat exceeded the acceptable size range, Narin also had a brief chat with the Reserve Umpire about the same.
KKR’s young Angakish Raghuvanshi was also present during the examination of Narin’s bat, but he passed the exam.
What are the rules of bat shape?
As per the rules set by the Control Board for Cricket in India (BCCI), the width of the bat face should not exceed the range of 10.79 cm. There is also a check for the thickness of the blade that should not exceed 6.7 cm. The width of the bat should be within a range of 4 cm while the length of the bat should not exceed 96.4 cm.
Since the beginning of the IPL, bat checks have been done at random intervals in several matches. The authorities have moved to the players’ dressing room to make mandatory checks. However, in Rajasthan Royals (RR) vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Game and Delhi Capital (DC) vs Mumbai Indians (MI), the check being done on the ground, just outside the razor, was seen on the field.
