BCCI allows ‘temporary replacement’ after losing foreign players of CSK and DC

IPL teams will not be allowed to maintain these replacement players for IPL 2026 auction

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that they’ll allow Indian Premier League (IPL) teams to bring in ‘temporary replacements’ for foreign players who aren’t coming back to India. The Delhi Capitals (DC) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had lost Jake Fraser-McGurk and Jamie Overton, who weren’t keen on returning for IPL 2025.

But there is a caveat. These replacement players can’t be retained. They may play however many replacing matches but will have to register their names for the IPL 2026 mini auction since they weren’t originally picked by any of the 10 teams in Jeddah in November last year.

“Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament,” the league said in a memo sent to teams.

“This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026,” the memo added.

Delhi Capitals replace Jake Fraser-McGurk

The Capitals have already announced the replacement for Fraser-McGurk as Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman joins them for the remaining matches in IPL 2025 for Rs 6 crore.

Several foreign players will either not return for one reason or another. Players like Mitchell Starc didn’t have the best of experiences in Dharamshala after the game was called off after 10 overs. His wife, Alyssa Healy, has narrated the story, and it doesn’t look like Starc will return. For others like Tristan Stubbs or Jos Buttler might have to return before the IPL 2025 Playoffs due to national commitments.

Now, it’s up to the franchises. Whether they’ll replace the foreign players and tell them to stay at home or let them join for just the group stage.
