Did Rohit Sharma retire on his own or was he forced to retire by BCCI?

Next to the India vs England test series, Rohit Sharma retired from the tests, but what role did the BCCI play in calling the Test Captain?
A test retirement that many people saw, but it still came as a surprise. Yes, the entire nation, clinging to its TV and social media channels on what is happening between India and Pakistan, took the step of MS Dhoni. He quietly declared his test retirement in 19:29 hours on 7 May when Dhoni declared his retirement. But one can question why now, not after the Australia series or when India’s squad is announced for the England Test series.
The reason is: It was not completely in Rohit’s hands. The BCCI Selection Committee forced him to take that call early. According to the Times of India report, Rohit offered to step as captain of Tats and play Test as a player. However, given his poor appearance, the selectors did not want any chaos on a tour of England, such as Ravichandran Ashwin in Australia.
“Rohit offered himself to abandon the Test Captain. Last week, he told the selectors that he should find other options. He wanted to test himself in the first two tests. However, the selectors were not comfortable with that idea,” A BCCI source told toi on Wednesday.
Rohit Sharma’s test retirement: 4 months are too late
After an average of 6.20 in five innings in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and then dropped himself from the final test, Rohit Sharma made his position unstable. He had to go. Rohit took an average of 11.47 in the final red-ball season in 17 innings. When he returned to form in the white-ball season, his red-ball form is such that the selectors cannot find a place for him in the India’s squad for the England series.
They had to lead India in England – some selectors were not comfortable about – or they had to retire from tests. Rohit chose the latter.
“He was asked to commit to the entire tour. The selectors and the team management did not want to deal with chaos in the middle of the tour, such as Ravichandran took place with Ashwin on a tour of Australia. Rohit also reached the same page and decided to call it quits,” The source said.

New leaders for new WTC cycle
Even when BCCI appointed Rohit Sharma as a Test captain in 2022, the idea process was clear. He will prepare the youth to take captaincy from the next test cycle. After Virat Kohli, Rohit was considered a stop-gap solution. However, with Rohit with the T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy for India, things changed a bit.
The second problem was an inconsistency of the next-gene stars. Initially, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill were on a shortlist to make Rohit a success. Bumrah seemed to be a natural heir. However, the charge management of a fast bowler of all three forms, especially like Bumrah, became an impossible option.
KL Rahul does not even have a permanent place on the test side. Therefore, they were also rejected. It has left Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as two options. Gill is already vice-captains of white-ball sides and Rohit will be successful in Odis and Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is. But in the test, he has not yet proved his subtlety.

Shubman-Rishabh Conduration
The average of Shubman in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) is 25.70. While he has not yet played a test in New Zealand, his poor returns in the other three countries make it a difficult choice. In a way, he is not ready to jump to test the captaincy.
Other options, Rishabh Pant, is not a great record as a captain. He is out of form in all three formats and even in IPL 2025. His poor shot selection inspired the great Sunil Gavaskar to shout: Three times stupid, stupid, stupid during a comment in Australia. These Conundrums forced the selectors to delay their calls.
But now, instead of another stop-gap solution in Virat Kohli, which is also out of the form in the test, Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI Selection Committee wants to take a call for the future. And, Shubman Gill still emerges as the best option.
“The selectors’ idea process is clear. They want a new leader for the tour of England and Rohit does not fit as a captain, especially considering as his red ball. They want to groom a young leader for the next test cycle and the selection committee has informed the BCCI that Rohit will not lead the team,” A BCCI source told Indian express,
