“South Africa will bother Australia to win the WTC final”: AB de Villiers

South Africa felt Egoniazali less in the T20 World Cup 2024 final. Now, he has another chance to win a major ICC Trophy.

One of the best of his generation has backed South Africa! As South Africa gear up for their maiden appearance in a World Test Championship (WTC) final, one of their most iconic figures, AB de Villiers, believes history could be in the making. The Proteas will lock horns with defending champions Australia at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground later this month.

South Africa has AB de Villiers backing

For de Villiers, the stage couldn’t be more fitting. “This is a massive moment for South African cricket—a final at Lord’s. The entire nation will be behind our team, and hopefully, we can cross the line,” he said on Star Sports.

South Africa’s path to the final was built on resolute home victories against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, while Australia cruised through after strong away performances and a commanding home stretch. India, who contested the last two WTC finals, faded after consecutive series losses to New Zealand and Australia. The defeats were gut-wrenching, possibly playing a major role in the retirement of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as well. Australia completely hammered India in the BGT.

Yet, de Villiers isn’t daunted by the enormity of Australia’s pedigree. “I’m excited for the challenge. It’s a well-balanced side, and I’m quietly confident we can upset Australia. I say ‘upset’ because they’re clearly the favourites for this ICC World Test Championship Final,” he added. He also acknowledged Australia’s structure and depth. “They’re a well-oiled machine. It won’t be easy for South Africa. But we’re going there with in-form players and big-hearted guys who have something to prove on this stage.”
