“Since he is fit …”: East-India selectors refund this star as Rohit Sharma’s successor in England Test

Rohit Sharma’s sudden retirement from Test cricket has threatened the selectors as he needs to find a new captain for England for the upcoming tour of India. India will face England in the five-match Test series, which will be kick-set from June 20 and the squad is yet to be announced. This is going to be an important series for both teams as it will also mark the start of the 2025–27 bicycle of the World Test Championship. Rohit took Rohit on Instagram on Wednesday and bid for Eduu for the longest format of the game, stating that he would continue to represent India in ODIs.

As Rohit hung his shoes, the selectors want to prepare a young captain and according to reports, the choice of Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant has emerged as top contenders. The report also states that the selectors are unlikely to work for Pesar Jasprit Bumrah to manage their charge.

Bumrah has led India several times and is the first and fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia.

Recently, former selection committee chairman MSK Prasad supported Bumrah as Rohit’s correct successor and said that Pesar should be appointed as the captain of India in the longest format.

“Why not, the man? Why not? Because he is now fit, why not?” Prasad asked India today whether Bumrah is still in dispute for captaincy.

“You currently have three options: Bumrah, Shubman Gill, and KL Rahul. These are the three options. If you are looking at Bumrah, he will clearly play both bicycles-another next is nothing wrong. And whatever opportunities were there, they have to lead, they have done very well,” he said.

Prasad further stated that Gill is also a good option, but he needs to maintain his good performance in number 3 positions in the first tests.

“I think I am fine with one of them (Gill or Bumrah). They are considering both. I think to start with a series like England, we don’t want anyone not to be under pressure,” Prasad said.

“I think, I think Shubman needs a good series in England or New Zealand, so that he can focus on his batting. Therefore, I think Bumrah is a great leader. There is no other idea about this. You can start with Bumrah and make Shubman a vice-captain,” he said.
