“Why change something?” Shubman Gill vs Kl Rahul No. The debate for 4 slots responded to Virat Kohli after retirement

Team India faces a puzzle. After the retirement of Stallwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket, India has two big shoes to fill England’s five -match Test tour in June. The biggest hole in the middle is number 4 slot, which Kohli had made his own since Sachin Tendulkar retired in 2013. India has many options that they could go together, but former India opener Wasim Jafar has said that he should return Shubman Gill in this role.
Gill is widely expected to handle India as Test Captain, and may be the successor of Kohli in number 4.
“I think Shubman may be a boy (to bat at number 4). He opens in white-ball cricket, but in Test cricket, he needs to go to 4,” Jafar said while talking to the Times of India.
While India could try KL Rahul at number 4, looking at the versatility of the 33 -year -old batsman, Gill seems to be a long -term condition for the role.
Jafar also said that Rahul should be placed at the top of the order after an impressive performance during the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
“KL Rahul and Yashsvi Jaiswal have performed well as an opener in the border-Gavaskar Trophy. I think KL should continue to open. Why has something that has changed?
Gill’s Gujarat’s Titans team partner B Sai Reformson has emerged as a unanimous pick to enter India’s play for a tour of England. Despite scoring more than 500 runs in IPL 2025, Sudarson has impressed many by his nature.
However, in which order India plays Jaiswal, Rahul, Sudarshan and Gill, it is what we have to wait and find out.
Gill and Rahul are not the only contenders for number 4 slots. The choice of Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan and Shreyas Iyer will compete for all the roles, and one run of good form can establish its place in the XI of India.
However, Gill seems to be a heir in-wetting.
Despite 35 matches, 35 Test average proud, Gill has long been herald among the stylish right-hand stalwarts of India as the next-line, which is after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Now that he is a favorite in the captaincy race in Test cricket, Gill can also be assigned a prestigious role of number 4 in whites.
