IPL 2025 Mid-season review: Batsmen continue to dominate, emergence of underchivers and no benefit of home

This is Deja Wu. The massacre continues. The devastation in the powerplay has not stopped. It is raining four more sixes. Yes, IPL 2025 has reflected the previous edition and the batsmen have taken their domination to one level only this season. This is the same apocalypse – only the annehilateers have changed to some extent! While Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capital led the Mini-revolution last year, this time the attack has been led by Punjab Kings.
Bindu, the other big talk of the 18th edition of the IPL Big 3 – has been a great failure of Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders – has struggled to keep pace in the competition and it has struggled to keep pace in the competition and it has created perennial underchivers – Punjab Kings, Deli Capital and Royal Challenging Bengaluru – who have created early waves. The chase continues, but does not play at home – this is another trend from the season.
We look at trends, patterns and other talking points mid-season from IPL 2025.
Run-rate continues
Most fans and pundits classified 2024 as a Vipathan in the 17 -year history of the IPL! The batsmen scored and how, there was havoc in the powerplay, it was flooding fours and sixes, record yoga was set and broke and the run-vessels increased to an all-time high. Well, unfortunately for the bowlers, experts misunderstood their forecasts. 2024 was not an exception. This was actually a revolutionary year in the IPL that set benchmark for the coming seasons.
The average run-rate after the first 35 matches of the previous season was 9.49. Interestingly, the average run-ant mid-season in 2025 is also 9.49, which is less decimal points compared to the previous season! This shows that the massacre continues and the batsmen have dominated the same extent in 2024. In 20024, 200 was violated on more than 200 occasions in half the way. This number has increased to 21 in this season!
In IPL 2025 (after 35 matches), 1066 four have so far been four hits, which is 15 more hits for the fence as compared to a similar phase in the previous season.
Genocide in powerplay
Last season, the tectonic change was seen in the first six overs when the batsmen led an unprecedented attack in opposition bowlers like never before. All-time records were set as teams like Sunrisers, KKR, Delhi Capital and MI for the highest team in the powerplay. According to Cricket-21 deep analytics, the average run-rate in the Powerplay Mid-season in 2024 was 9.34.
Well, remarkable, the scoring rate in the first six overs has moved even further this season and stood in the 9.6 mid-season in 2025! In 2024, 70-plus was violated 12 times after the first 35 matches. This number has increased to 14 in this season. The number states that the bar has been raised even more by the batsmen this season. The only difference is that the heroes have changed. While Sunrisers Hyderabad (Run-Runs of 12.4), Kolkata Knight Riders (10.7) and Mumbai Indians (10.4) caused havoc in Powerplay in the previous season, it is Punjab Kings (10.5 runs), which is dominating the first 6 overs this season. Another interesting change in 2025 is that the loot in the powerplay is more evenly distributed. In the last season, only five teams have run-rate 9+ in Powerplay, while nine teams (with the exception of Chennai Super Kings) have a 9+ run-rate in Powerplay in this edition.
Chase marginal profit
Chasing in IPL and T20 cricket has been a historical benefit and this trend continues in this version too! The team has won 19 of the first 35 matches of the second batting. Team Chasing won 18 matches on a similar platform last season! RCB is the most successful team, winning all its three matches this season.
No house benefits
The domestic team won 20 out of 35 matches on the mid-way stage in 2024. This trend has reversed this season and the ‘distant’ team won 18 out of 35 matches (one tie) by 18. Royal Challengers Bangalore have lost all their three matches at home. Chennai Super Kings, historically claiming the best record at home in Chepack, have also fought to lose three of the four matches in their stronghold this season. Kolkata Knight Riders have lost two matches of their three matches in the Eden Gardens in the tournament.
GT – The Best Batting Unit, CSK – the worst
Titans have been the most cheerful batting unit this season, with the best joint batting average of 41 and run-rate of 10.1 per over. Their balls also put them in the top cluster in a range ratio of 4.5. GT has got the best start in the competition with the best average for the initial wicket (47.7). He also has the best run-rate in the Middle Over (9.9). CSK has been the worst batting unit in the tournament, not surprisingly.
He has the second worst batting average (26.2) and also has the most dull unit of the season, with a run-rate of only 8.1. For just perspective, all other teams have a run-vet of 9+ in the competition that shows how CSK has been bad with bat this season. They have reduced all four 180+ pursuit in the tournament.
A new winner on the card?
This year, there is only one IPL trophy between the top 5 teams at the points table mid-season. While Gujarat Titans and Lucknow super legends are the new entry, the other three – Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capital and Punjab Kings – perennial underchivers. He never won the IPL. This season is struggling to deal with the speed of the tournament with Big 3 (Mi, CSK and KKR), will 2025 finally break zinc for one of RCB, DC or PBK?
