Brian Bennett denied Zim vs SA 1 Test after suffering from Kwena Maphaka bouncer

In his last three Tests, Brian Bennett scored two fifties and a hundred. He is Zimbabwe’s second best batsman after Sean Williams in 2025.
Brian Bennett has been ruled out of the ongoing Zimbabwe vs South Africa 1st Test in Bulawayo. The Zimbabwe opener was struck on the head by a sharp bouncer by Kwena Maphaka in the sixth over of the first innings. Bennett was going for a pull but was beaten by Maphaka’s pace and the ball took his top edge to hit him on the helmet. He was batting at 19 from 25 balls at this point.
Brian Bennett suffers a mild concussion
The medical team performed the mandatory concussion test, as per ICC rules. Bennett continued to bat after clearing it but didn’t seem absolutely fine. Just two overs later, 8th, Bennett walked off the field. He retired hurt and Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed later that Bennett has been diagnosed with a mild concussion and wouldn’t take further part in the match due to the concussion protocols.
According to new ICC rules which came into effect earlier this month, teams have to name five concussion substitutes before the game. Taking these into account, Zimbabwe has named Prince Masvaure as his replacement. The 36-year-old has played 9 Test matches for Zimbabwe and is a top-order batter by trade. Therefore, he’s a like-for-like replacement for Bennett. Masvaure will field in the second innings and will bat as well.
“Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett will play no further part in the ongoing Test match against South Africa at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo after being diagnosed with a mild concussion. As per concussion protocols, he will take no further part in the match. Prince Masvaure has been named as his replacement, making his 10th appearance in Test cricket,” Zimbabwe Cricket said in a statement.
