Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin will no longer be able to see a stand in his name at the Uppal Stadium in Hyderabad. The decision to remove its name from the North Stand was taken in February this year after the city’s Lord’s Cricket Club filed a complaint on the potential ‘conflict of interest’. It returned in 2019 when the North Stand was renamed from VVS Laxman Pavilian to Azharuddin Stand. Interestingly, it was former India captain Azharuddin who was then the President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).
In the petition filed, Lords Cricket Club alleged that Azharuddin violated the Association’s memorandum and HCA rules and regulations. Citing Rule 38, the petition said that a member of the apex council could not take any decision in their favor. Therefore, it was requested to take Azharuddin’s name down from the stand.
After HCA Lokpal accepted the request, a fuming Azaruddin promised to take the case to court.
“There is no conflict of interest in it. I don’t want to comment, I don’t want to stay at this level. The cricketing world will laugh in the association. 17 -year -old cricket, about 10 -year -old captain, and with the distinction. It is how you treat cricketers in Hyderabad. It is a very sad state.
Lords Cricket Club, however, is happy with the result of the petition. Club’s treasurer, Somna Mishra said, “This decision confirms our commitment to transparency and integrity. We thank the authorities for their fair and just assessment.”
