Yuvraj Singh’s father “promised to help him become the captain of India”

Yograj Singh revealed that he promised to help Yuvraj to become captain when Star was considering retirement

Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh revealed that his son Yuvraj had given up on his career without a fight despite being advised against doing so. The prolific all-rounder announced is decision to retire from all formats of game on June 10, 2019. Yuvraj last featured in an ODI and T20I in 2017 while his last Test appearance came back in 2012.

When Yuvraj ignored Yograj’s advice on retirement

In an exclusive interview with Insidesport, Yograj revealed that at the time of Yuvraj’s retirement, he had attempted to convince the southpaw out of it. He said that he had offered to help make the southpaw the captain and had even said that they could then throw everyone out. However, Yograj said that Yuvraj gave up and had decided to hang his boots.

“Even when Yuvraj was retiring I promised him that I will help him become India captain and that we will throw everybody out but he quit,” Yograj said.

Yuvraj was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. Following treatment and remission, he returned to action in 2012.

Yograj’s remarks came in the backdrop of Rohit Sharma’s abrupt decision to retire from Tests. He opined that one should fight instead of leaving the ground and that if the latter is done, then defeat is certain.

Yuvraj Singh’s father also claimed that both Rohit and Virat had at least 5 more years in Test cricket, adding that they should have continued playing. He pointed out that the veteran duo should have stuck around to ensure that the baton was passed on the youngsters in a seamless manner.

Virat and Rohit can still play for another 5 years in Test cricket. They should have played. They should be there to see that the baton is passed to the youngsters,” Yograj added.
