Yashasvi Jaiswal has no issue with catching technology, says former head coach of India

Yashasvi Jaiswal has come under a lot of scrutiny. The Indian opener dropped four catches against England in Headingley and, for some, was the reason behind India’s defeat. He dropped two straightforward catches in the slip and two tough ones. But for people, the end number matters. Jaiswal did drop four catches. That’s a fact.

And many were frustrated that he wasn’t removed from the slips by captain Shubman Gill. Of course, one of his drops was in the outfield as well. But according to India’s former head coach Greg Chappell, Jaiswal has no technical deficiencies when it comes to catching, and it wasn’t just his days.

Chappell added that perhaps a hand injury could have been the reason behind the four drops. His confidence also took a hit after he dropped the first couple of chances and it led to more errors.

“India dropped several catches in Leeds, and while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja were among those involved, both are usually safe hands. The drops I saw didn’t look technical – they just didn’t stick. It can happen to the best. That said, Jaiswal gives the impression of being low on confidence or that he is suffering a hand injury. He seems to be hoping to catch them rather than expecting to. One of his missed chances came with him running in from the boundary – a low, skimming catch. For my money, that’s one of the hardest in cricket,” Chappell wrote for ESPNcricinfo.

The former coach added that due to white-ball cricket, slip fielding prowess has diminished as outfield catches have become the norm.

“With the advent of more white-ball cricket, the specialist slip fielder is not getting as many opportunities as was once the case. All the more reason why catching practice, in particular, has to be as game-like as possible,” he further wrote.
