With new bowling, SRH will release Mohammed Shami before the IPL 2026 auction?

Just a few months after India helped win the Champions Trophy, Mohammed Shami launched a difficult campaign with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

The winds of change are blowing in the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) camp. After a disappointing IPL 2025 season, the franchise has begun restructuring, starting with a major change in its coaching staff. On Monday, SRH announced the appointment of former India pacer Varun Aaron as their new bowling coach, replacing James Franklin ahead of IPL 2026.

Varun Aaron in, Mohammed Shami out?

But Aaron’s arrival has already sparked fresh speculation. A resurfaced video from IPL 2025, where Aaron appeared as an expert on ESPNcricinfo, shows him predicting Mohammed Shami’s potential release from SRH. “I’d say Mohammad Shami [would be released],“Aaron said at that time.

At the time of speaking, Varun Aaron was completely an expert and was not part of the SRH camp. This was his personal assessment, saying that Mohammed Shami and Ishaan Kishan could be purchased back at affordable prices. However, their point is bound to change. There is a difference between being an expert, speaking from outside, and a team is a coach that usually supports his resources. And with Shami being a natural leader of a bowling pack, Aaron can just rebuild his thinking and unanimously return Shami as part of the SRH Thinking Group.

Time is going on for Shami?

Mohammed Shami’s return to the IPL in 2025 was anything but smooth. The INR was raised for 10 crores in the auction, expectations were Akash-high after showing their stellar in the Champions Trophy. But veteran Pesar struggled to find the form and rhythm, managing just 6 wickets in 9 matches at the devastating economy rate of 11.23.

His most fanatable outing came against Punjab Kings, where he scored 75 runs in 4 overs, the second worst bowling performance in IPL history. Eventually, SRH turned to Sri Lanka’s Ehsan Malinga, who paid faith with 13 wickets in 7 matches, attacking the bowling.

Given how poor Shami performed in IPL 2025, her shares were forced to suffer. However, no one can really predict what happens in a mini auction. The demands are high, but the supply is low. Therefore, the value of any player can be amped. Therefore, just to ensure and show confidence in Shami’s abilities, SRH can only maintain it for IPL 2026. A lot, of course, also depends on India’s white balls, as well as including the Asia Cup, where Shami is likely to be selected.
