Why Shreyas Iyer is suitable for converting Iyer Kohli to number 4 in Test

Shreyas Iyer last played a Test in February 2022 and has since been out of Indian TN.

The exit of Virat Kohli from the test may be the right time to return to the Indian side for the longest format of Shreyas Iyer’s game. A report claimed that Kohli has informed the BCCI about his decision to retire from the trials just before the five -match series against England. While an official announcement has not yet been made to the former captain, his departure would mean the number 4 location in the tests will be vacant.

Iyer’s recent form

Shreyas last played a Test against England in February 2024. After this, in the first half of 2024, according to the BCCI mandate, he was snatched from the BCCI Central Contracts list to fail to play domestic red ball cricket. However, he worked hard in all the domestic Trophy and Ranji Trophy by participating in all the domestic trophy and the Ranji Trophy by participating in all domestic red balls in the latter half of the year.

In the Duleep Trophy, he scored 154 runs in 3 innings, an average 25.66. Subsequently, his performance continuously improved as he regularly participated in the Ranji Trophy. He managed to score 480 runs in 5 matches, including an average of 68.5, including two hundreds.

Even in white-ball cricket, Iyer managed to score runs, eventually leading to his return to the national side in January 2025. He scored 325 runs and 345 runs out of 5 and 9 matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mashtak Ali Trophy.

To close it, he ended as the leading run-gold for India in the Champions Trophy 2025.

Shres record in tests so far

Iyer made his Test debut in 2021 and has played only 14 Tests since then. He has 811 runs for his name, average 36.86 and he has one hundred and five fifties for his name. Iyer has scored most of the score in the longest format of the game, while he has scored six -number -432 runs in 7 matches. After this, 294 runs are scored from 6 matches, while batting at number five. At number 4, he played just one match and scored 56 runs.

Despite his inexperience of batting at number 4, he can be the best solution for India in a situation when Kohli retires. Eventually, his exact form suggests that he can thrive very well in that situation.

In first -class cricket, he has 6363 runs from 81 matches and average 48.57.

One certainly cannot compare Shreyas to Virat Kohli, looking at the huge experience after playing at number 4 for India. In 98 matches, Batting Mestro has scored 7564 runs batting at number 4, and the average is 50.09.

However, he was struggling to go to the last series against Australia. While India may have many other options to convert Kohli at number 4 after departing from tests, Iyer may be a viable option. However, it remains to be seen whether the selectors will open the doors to the test side for Shreyas’s re-entry.
