Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has explained Logic Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s decision to retire from Test cricket before England’s upcoming tour. Kohli announced shock through social media on Monday, when Rohit also decided to retire from Test cricket last week. Two stallwarts of Indian cricket are expected to continue in ODIs only, announced their T20I retirement on the same day after the T20 World Cup final last year.

Rohit and Kohli’s retirement means that India will have a relatively inexperienced team for the five -match Test series against England. Gavaskar suggested that the two must have played against England, it was a three-testing tour instead of five.

“We all wanted them to play in Indian cricket. If you want to take a decision, they are only what they can do. They may have decided that if it had been a 3-match chain, it would have been a different story.

Gavaskar explained how players often start doubting their abilities, especially after a disastrous tour like Australia, where both Rohit and Kohli failed to set fire.

He said, “After the Australia tour, many players were asked questions, not only 1-2 players, but all were included in bowling or batting. After winning the first Test, everyone thought that India would succeed in Australia for the third consecutive time. It did not happen, so the questions were definitely asked,” he said.

“And sometimes you ask yourself those questions, do I still have that ability, is I getting satisfaction in it. When you start asking these questions, you start telling yourself that if I remove myself, it would be better. It is difficult to reduce those ideas,” Gavaskar explained.
