Virat Kohli is widely considered one of the best batsmen in modern cricket and over the years, he has established himself as one of the most popular cricketers in the world. Kohli announced his arrival on the international stage by India, which is a leader for the U-19 World Cup title in India and his performance in domestic cricket also attracted the attention of national selectors. In a recent episode of ‘RCB Bold Diaries’ podcast, Virat revealed that he was never considered a lump sum match-winner, but it was his determination that he started for the Indian cricket team. He also revealed how he was supported by the then Captain MS Dhoni and coach Gary Kirsten in the early days of his international career.
“I was very realistic about my abilities. Because I saw many other people playing. And I didn’t feel that my game was close anywhere. The only thing I had was determined. And if I wanted to win my team, I was ready to do anything,” Kohli said.
“This was the reason that I was likely to play for India initially. And Gary (Kirsten) and MS (Dhoni) made me clear that we were supporting you to play you at number three.”
Kohli said that both of them encouraged him to play independently without any prohibition or doubt, rely on his sometimes a dairy attitude to help the Indian find his drain and confidence.
“This is what you can do for the team. What you represent on the field, your energy, your engagement, the biggest value for us. We want you to play this way.
“So, I was never seen as this lump sum match winner, which can change the game from anywhere. But I had this, I am going to live in the fight. I am not going to give up. And that is what he has supported.”
