While on one hand, the IPL is unearthing new teenage talents like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre — but on the other, it is spoiling certain players, which could eventually hurt Indian cricket, as per legendary Sunil Gavaskar. In his column for Sportstar, the former India captain wrote, about the alteration in the rules, that the board did to accommodate MS Dhoni as “uncapped player”.

The BCCI had revived a rule, that allowed Indian players, who haven’t played international cricket in five years, to be considered for the uncapped category. That allowed CSK to retain the 43-year-old for 4 Cr. “To accommodate Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who became an uncapped player before the auction last year, the limit was raised to Rs 4 crore,” Gavaskar wrote.

“A whole lot of the players bought for huge amounts simply fade away as their hunger and drive are satiated… Indian cricket takes a bit of a beating at the loss of any player whether he has been successful or not,” he added. Meanwhile, Gavaskar asked if that was any multi-crore uncapped player, who brought a lot of value to the team?

“In all these years, it is hard to recall an uncapped player bought for huge numbers who has justified his inclusion in the team,” Gavaskar further wrote. He further said that the BCCI should reverse this decision, and change the limit on the salaries these players are offered, to safeguard the interests of Indian cricket.
