Portland Timbers will get another run in less than a month in the San Jose earthquake, when after losing 1-0 in the Lamor Hunt US Open Cup.
Portland manager Phil Neville said after the match, “(this) is probably the worst that I have felt all the season.”
Timbers (8-4-5, 29 points) have won two of the three league encounters since they were out of the competition on 20 May. Recently, a stop-time scrame from midfielder David Ayala’s boot on June 9 won 2–1 for Timbers to visit St. Louis City SC.
“We were fitter,” Neville said. “We were used to play on the turf in this season and I felt that replacement made a large impact in the game.”
