As Bharat is included in a new chapter in Test cricket under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, former head coach Ravi Shastri has given some thoughtful advice to the young leader. Speaking on the ICC review, Shastri emphasized the importance of patience and composition for Gill as he plays the role of a leading India in the five-observance series in England. “I think take your time,” Shastri said while addressing the 25 -year -old captain. “It’s not easy. They have been asked to do a hard work – which is to captain India on a tour of England.” Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli recently retired from Test cricket with experienced players, Gill now leads a relatively young Indian squad. The upcoming series starting from Headingley, 2025–27 also marks India’s first challenge in the ICC World Test Championship cycle. Although Gill’s Test record is 1,893 runs in 32 matches at an average of 35.05, Shastri is hopeful about his ability. “It’s never easy,” he said, “but I think he will learn from this risk.”

While reflecting Gill’s leadership in IPL 2025 with Titans in Gujarat, Shastri praised his cool and stable approach despite the team exiting the eliminator. The former India coach said, “What I saw in the IPL with the Titans of Gujarat, he looked very composed and calm. He has a good nature.” Gill’s recent appearance in white-ball cricket has been encouraging, which includes a half-century in India’s recent intra-scv match in Bekenham, indicating its readiness for further difficult challenges. In England, the test chain, even known for testing the most experienced players, will have a true test of their technique and nature.

The tour gives India a chance to end its long wait for a Test series win in England, with a final win in 2007 under the leadership of Rahul Dravid. Shastri concluded by revealing the importance of this journey for the development of Gill. Shastri said, “He has matured as a person, he has got some young players with him, and I think it is a learning state as far as Shubman Gill goes.”
