Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Daniel Vettori gives a blunt verdict on IPL 2025 ‘Bat Check’: “I wish he had it …”

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s head coach Daniel Vetori said on Wednesday that the umpires who examine the bats size with a gauge in the IPL do not matter and wanted the same parameters during their sports days. The umpires are checking bats with a gauge, through which the willow will have to pass to eradicate the use of oversized bats. This season is being checked by on-field umpires and in the latest example, Kolkata Knight Riders’ Bat of Enrich Nortze did not test on Tuesday and had to convert into a game against Punjab Kings.
“I want to check the bats when I was playing,” Vetori quipped during the SRH press conference here at the Venkhed Stadium.
“No, I don’t think it makes any difference. People are tested regularly. Umpire goes through the dressing room for a long time, so () people know that their bats are compliant, so it is just a second, and everyone moves forward.” He said, “It is trying to keep anyone a big bat, but it is very easy to get your bat through that gauge,” he said.
Vetori said that this is not a matter of discussion among SRH batsmen and said that he does not think the decrease in bat size is on the card.
He said, “Not really. I think the bats have grown up without gaining weight, this is a skill (to be credited to bat manufacturers) and what is the demand of batting groups or batsmen these days,” he said.
He said, “It is just a part of the game, part of development. Everyone enjoys sixes and fours, so I don’t think we are going to decrease in the size of the bat and it really doesn’t worry me,” he said.
Vetori said that his side would be seen to tap Ishan Kishan in his previous franchise and knowledge of Wankhede Stadium.
He said, “It would be foolish not to tap in some of that knowledge and understanding around the mentality of Mumbai and how they deal with certain situations, and also understand the surface, how it plays, dew factors, all those small things,” he said.
“They have a treasure of knowledge for this time and the rest of the coaches, but mainly because he is a great player.” Vetori said that the pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head remained important for their success, but admitted that the opposition teams have made a good plan.
He said, “Some people have done some good research around him and around the amount of false shots, which are leading for wickets, and this is a very high rate; usually batsmen get away with those types of things,” he said.
“There is an element of fate. Abhishek first scored a run, an element of teams that are actually scouting well, an element of understanding how they are both going to know about it.” He said, “It combines everything with performance, where we did not get the runs that we are used to achieve from them, and their initial partnership is important for our success,” he said.
Vetori did not read much in the teams, exploiting Rohit Sharma’s struggles against the left -handed speed of this IPL season.
“We are always liquid, but it would be difficult to move away from Pat (Cummins) and (Mohammed) Shami, who have proved themselves long, long, especially with the new ball,” he said.
“One of those some time that you really find positions in your favor, we want to use two best in the world, to exploit it, this is our thinking at this time.” Meanwhile, Naman Dhir of Mumbai Indians said that he is trying to create most of the batting opportunities in the overs of death.
“Just after the auction, I was told by MJ (Mahela Jayawardane) that I will bat on the 6th or 7th (Spot). I have been mentally preparing since then. (Keyon) Pollard and Hardik (Pandya) always talk to me.
