Steve Smith suffered a finger with a finger and sent to the hospital; All but out of WTC final

Australia were dealt a massive setback on Day 3 of the World Test Championship Final (WTC) at Lord’s, as Steve Smith was forced off the field with a dislocated finger. The incident occurred during the second session when Smith, stationed at first slip, attempted a sharp chance offered by South Africa captain Temba Bavuma off Mitchell Starc.

Bavuma, on just two at the time, top-edged a short delivery, but Smith not only grassed the opportunity but also injured his right little finger in the process. It has proved extremely costly for Australia since Bavuma has led the charge superbly. He and Aiden Markram have stitched a partnership of 143* runs so far to take South Africa ever so close to their first ICC trophy (in 27 years).

The 36-year-old immediately left the field with team physios and did not return for the remainder of the session. Later, Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed that Smith had suffered a compound dislocation and was taken to a nearby hospital for scans and further treatment. His availability on Day 4 is highly unlikely.

“Steve Smith has suffered a compound dislocation of his right little finger while fielding in the slip cordon during the ICC Men’s World Test Championship Final against South Africa at Lord’s,” Australia confirmed.

“He was assessed by Australian team medical staff at the ground and taken to hospital for x-rays and further treatment.”

Prior to the injury, Smith had played a key role in the first innings with a typically composed 66 off 112 balls, keeping Australia in the contest after early wickets fell. The Proteas, led by Aiden Markram’s unbeaten century, are just 69 runs away from creating massive history.
