“Shubman Gill’s chance to become a hero, Rahane should call”

Mohammad Kaif has advised Shubman Gill to interact with experienced Rahane before going on his first tour as a Test captain.
Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif reckons that Shubman Gill should dial up Ajinkya Rahane and have a chat with him before embarking on his maiden tour as Test captain. Ending days of speculation, cheif selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed the Punjab batter as Rohit Sharma’s successor. Kaif opined that Gill had a chance to became a hero in the upcoming series against England but could use some help from a veteran like Rahane.
Gill should call Rahane: Kaif
In a video on social media platform X, Kaif pointed out that Gill found himself in a similar position that Rahane had been in, back in Australia. He was referring to the time when a young Indian team handed an upset to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the absence of Virat Kohli and when Rahane was leading the team.
“I think this is a chance for Gill to become a hero. He is getting an opportunity to lead a young team in England, and in such cases sometimes the expectations are a bit low. That is something that Gill can use to his benefit, because when Rahane was leading India in Australia, before the Gabba Test everyone had said that it is a very young team,” Kaif said.
Kaif advised Gill to have a chat with Rahane before the England series. He said that Rahane had led a young Indian team to victory in Australia, pretty much a similar situation that Gill now finds himself in.
“But, Rahane’s young team defeated Australia in Australia. So, Gill should probably call Rahane and have a chat, because Rahane had done some brilliant work in that tour with a young side. Gill has to do something like that as well,” he added.
The five-match Test series against England is scheduled to commence from June 20. This will mark Gill’s first assignment as Test captain following the departure of Rohit Sharma and Cirat Kohli.
