Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. These are India’s last two Test captains. Filling their shoes won’t be easy. But that’s what Shubman Gill has to do.

The 25-year-old has to take the reins of a transitioning team. Jasprit Bumrah might not feature in all five India vs England Tests. At least half of the squad haven’t played in England, and some, like Sai Sudharsan, haven’t made their Test debut.

Underwhelming Test performance

But above it all, Gill has to justify his place in the team. Although he’s been named Rohit’s replacement, his performance isn’t actually good with the bat. That’s why some were irked and baffled by his selection as India’s Test captain.

And Sourav Ganguly believes the same. “He still has some work to do as a Test batter,” he told RevSportz.

Despite being uberly talented, Gill averages a mere 35.05 in Test cricket. And that too after 32 matches. This is a big sample size. And Gill must prove himself as a batter or else the pitchforks will be out before the India vs England Test series ends.

Chance to become India’s new Test hero

Ganguly also believes that a 5-match Test series in England is the right opportunity for Gill to come good. It’s tough conditions like these where Kohli earned his name by scoring bucketloads of runs. The former Indian captain thinks that if Gill stands up tall and leads from the front, people will hail him as a hero and forget about the shortcomings of the past.

“These are conditions where he needs to score runs. He is a young captain, and he will learn. Imagine if he does well. How good is it? He will be hailed as a hero. You live for such situations as a player,” Ganguly added.
