According to several reports, Shubman Gill, the Nest Indian cricket team is now the front-ranker who has now made retired Rohit Sharma successful as Test captain. Rohit Sharma, under which India entered the last World Test Championship final in 2023, declared its retirement on 7 May. Since then, India’s next Test captain has been intense speculation. Most of the reports claimed that Shubman Gill will pursue Rohit Sharma with the choice of Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul. The new captain will take over from India’s tour of England starting on June 20.
A report by the Times of India has now claimed that Gill recently met India’s coach Gautam Gambhir at his residence in Delhi and spoke for four to five hours. It was also said that BCCI chief selector Ajit Aggarkar met Gill on May 6 after the IPL 2025 match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 6 May.
BCCI is looking at Shubman Gill as a long -term captaincy option. “He has shown impressive leadership qualities in the way GT leads GT, which are currently at the top of the table in this season,” the report said. With a new WTC cycle starting from England tour, BCCI is eager to form a team around it.
Shubman Gill may lead Rohit Sharma to be successful as India’s Test captain during a tour of England, but former spinner R Ashwin said that other experienced names like Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja should also be considered for the hot seat.
The Indian team may be raised in the last week of May for the tour of England, and the run-up for the selection process dominates the dominance around the new captain.
“First of all, everyone is saying that Gill is the captain.
“If you are ready to go for a new person as a captain, I would say why not understand him about an experienced man for two years before he handed him a job on a full -time basis.” After the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit from the tests, Jadeja is the most experienced player on the Indian side, with 3370 runs out of 80 tests and also has 323 wickets.
