“Shubman Gill needs the attitude adjustment as a test captain”

Former Australian cricketer Brad Haddin has targeted new Indian captain Shubman Gill after India put up a miserable show in terms of fielding in ENG vs IND 1st Test. The game saw India drop over six catches, thanks to Jaiswal, Jadeja, Sai Sudharsan and others. India will now head into the second Test at Edgbaston with pressure on them, having started off on a 0-1 note.

Speaking on Willow Talk podcast, Haddin claimed that team that was great in the past had a standout feature – “a great fielding team”. He reckoned that Gill, who just lost his first game as captain recently – needs an attitude adjustment.

“Every great team, no matter what year you’re playing, the one standout feature they’ve always had is that they’ve been a great fielding team. And I think that is one legacy Gill has start to leave now on this team. He needs an attitude adjustment,” Haddin said.

Haddin went on to suggest that the declining standard of catching in the IPL 2025 was one of the reasons for poor fielding by the Indian team. He said that it was all about attitude.

“If you want to field well and compete the whole time, it’s only attitude. You can do all your technical work off the field and have as many coaches as anyone, but it won’t matter. Even in the IPL this year, the catching was horrible. And that could be a byproduct,” Haddin added.

India dropped as many as six catches, allowing Ollie Pope to score a century and Ben Duckett a half-century while Harry Brook went on to score 99.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and Sai Sudharsan were all guilty of dropping chances as India allowed England to score 327/5 in 77 overs by Lunch on Day 3. Jaiswal was the worst with three dropped chances. And add Jasprit Bumrah’s no-ball to Brook, India missed seven chances in the first innings alone. In Headingley, Team India entered the Hall of Shame, recording the most dropped catches in a match in the last five years.
