Shubman Gill has started his preparations for the India vs England Test series. The tour begins on June 20, but Gill has shown interest in featuring for India A to get into red-ball rhythm. Gill’s record in England hasn’t been great, and it’s only natural that he wants to correct his past shortcomings on the upcoming tour.

According to IANS, Gill hit the nets in Ahmedabad but wasn’t facing the white ball. The Gujarat Titans (GT) captain instead opted for a red cherry. This is something Indian players did back in 2023 and 2021, as the World Test Championship Final was held not too long after the Indian Premier League (IPL) season ended.
Since GT has already qualified for the IPL 2025 Playoffs, Gill doesn’t have much pressure on his shoulders. He’s been in excellent touch and doesn’t need to work on his T20 game at the moment. This grants him the opportunity to get back into the Test groove.
Test captaincy on his mind?
One mustn’t forget that Gill is one of the candidates to take over from Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain. He’s been already named vice-captain in white-ball cricket, and as mentioned above, he leads GT as well. If the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to name him captain, it makes sense that he’s started preparations for England.
If the BCCI is still torn about choosing one of Gill, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant, it should also show how decided Gill is. But even if he isn’t named captain, this bodes well for Team India. Given that neither Rohit nor Virat Kohli will be there, you need guys like Gill to stand up.
He has underperformed. For someone of his pedigree, an average of 35 doesn’t do justice. He’s at the peak of his powers at the moment, and form seems to be on his side as well. Gill and India would hope he performs in England and shows everyone why he’s rated so highly.
