Sacramento State to join Big West in 2026, except football

The Sacramento State will leave the Big Sky Conference to attend the Big West Conference with 2026-27 academic year, the school announced this week.

Sacramento State officials have demanded exemption for Hornets Football Program to leave the Football Championship subdivision for the football bowl subdivision.

On Monday, the NCAA Football Opposition Committee recommended that the Division I Council should not support the request. The formal decision of the council is yet to be made.

Meanwhile, Sacramento State will transfer all its other sports, especially men and women’s basketball, baseball and softball to Big West. Hornets was an affiliated member of Big West for baseball since 1996-2002.

The rest of the conference include California Baptist, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fulrtan, Long Beach State, Cal State North (CSUN), UC Irwin, UC Rivaruside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and Utah Valley.

Big Sky will leave nine members, mostly concentrated in the state of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.
