At least, Sacramento state football is determined, vow to move from FCS level to FBS in 2026, although the NCAA Division I Council denied a discount for the program to carry forward a level this week.
Since 2024, Sacramento State has expressed a desire to move to the highest level of college football, with the basic hopes to visit a re -configured PAC -12 conference, which was set to return to action in 2026 with five mountain waste conference programs.
But the Hornets program did not receive an invitation for its football program to attend an existing conference. Instead, Hornets launched a plan to leave the Big Sky Conference for the Big West Conference in all sports, but football and its football team plays FBS independent in 2026.
While NCAA has nicked that plan, for the least time, the school is planning to move forward anyway.
“We are still planning to play FBS football in 2026,” was posted on X by Sacramento State President Luke Wood when the NCAA refused to request school exemption.
“The state of Sacramento has met every meaningful benchmark for FBS membership, and we believe that our universities, our students and the entire Sacramento field major college is worth the college football,” Wood wrote.
As part of its plan to transfer its football program to FBS level, Sacramento State has proposed a 25,000 -seat football stadium. Its current football site, on more than 21,000 seats, is configured with a temporary stand.
Hornets also obtained a deal to move its men and women basketball games to the area of the house of Sacramento Kings for 2026.
Last season, in the football field, Sacramanto State did not fit the FBS team’s bill with a record of 3–9. Hornets proceeded 8–5 in 2023 and won the first round game in FCS playoffs.
