Rohit Sharma’s test journey: An average middle-order batsman for a fine opener

Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket and bid farewell for a good career, which was divided into two different parts. He was a very average middle-order batsman for the first 27 matches of his Test career, with a batting average of just 40. However, just like ODI cricket, his luck changed dramatically when he was pushed to open to the country. From the 2019 Visakhapatnam test to the Dharmasala test of 2024, Rohit – the test batsman took an average of 50 and was not only one of the major openers in the world, but also the leading batsman for India in the format.
Struggle outside India
Rohit made a great start to his test career with two hundreds in his first two performances for India – against the West Indies in Kolkata and Mumbai – but then saw a major decline in the whites for India. He scored just 1585 runs in his first 27 Tests, on an average at 39.6. Rohit had a very high failure rate of about 50% and crossed three -Aankra mark on just one more occasion – against Sri Lanka in Nagpur in 2017 – four years after its start in 2017! Although he still had outstanding returns at home, Rohit had a shocking number outside India, scoring just 816 runs in tests 18 away at an average of 26.3. He did not have a ton outside the country. Although a modern great in limited overs cricket, he was at the intersection of his long-time career and time was fast out for Rohit-Blasserer.
Vizag twin ton
Rohit had a terrible tour of South Africa and was then under a difficult tour. The uproar to see him out of Test XI increased. with
Doldrums, Rohit, was pushed to open his career as a very last solution for India. It turned out to be a masterstroke. Rohit counted the opportunity and how! He broke a ton in both innings of the series opener against South Africa in Vizag, which became the sixth Indian batsman to achieve a unique achievement. Amazing performance gave birth to Rohit Sharma – Test Opener – and another chapter for India in Test cricket.
Domination as Test Opener
From the Vijag Test in October 2019, March 2024, by the end of the Home Series against England in Dharmasala, Rohit – Test opener – rose in New Heights and Premier Top -Order in the world! He was currently the leading run-scorer among all the openers in the world in the frame and scored an average of nine centuries and 7 fifty in 32 matches for 2552 runs. Of the 15 openers who scored at least 1000 runs in the minimum 10 tests played during the period, only Dimuth Karunaratne (52.4) had a higher batting average than Rohit during this period. In these four and a half years, no inauguration of Rohit’s no more than 9 tons recorded did not record more tons.
Reference to time and performance
Rohit’s rise as a test opener in the format reconciled with a turbulent time for India’s Big 3. Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane scored a poor run in 2020 and 2021. Kohli was an average of 26.1, Pujara – 26.2 and Rahen – 25 was in this period and on Onas Rohit to step on and count it. Rohit scored 906 runs in just 11 trials at an average of 47.68 over all other Indian batsmen in the frame (2020-2021) at this time! In 2021, only 231 delivery in Chennai, his 161 runs in England (0–1 in the India series) has been widely given the status of hundreds of people by any batsman on Indian soil. Rohit played 20 tests at home between Vijag, 2019 and Dharmasala, 2024 and scored 1633 runs and on an average scored 54.43 and strike rate 65.4. At this time, no Indian scored more runs at home in the frame. The rate at which he scored his runs was also important because it not only demolished the opposition bowlers, but also made enough time for Indian bowlers to bowl the opposition twice.
Foreign change
While Rohit always had a good record in India, a big change in his test career came in his foreign performances. He scored 919 runs in an average 12 tests of 43.76 with two centuries and five fifty from India during this period. From his initial partnership with Shubman Gill in Brisbane and Sydney to record his first overseas hundred in the winning win at Lord’s in a large -scale victory – in the September 2021 Oval Test, Rohit extended the opener to height and contributed to some of India’s most important victory during this period.
Rohit took a big dip in his form in the last eight tests of his career and scored just 164 runs in 15 innings at an average of 10.93. These included two domestic tests against Bangladesh and three distance against New Zealand and three distance in Australia. However, his most important achievement in the longest format was the contribution he made as an opener – increasing his game, under pressure when the chips were down to India during the period between October 2019 and March 2024 – a period when other Indian batsmen struggled, Rohit reached the occasion and scored a tough runs when his team needed the most. And this is his biggest legacy for Indian Test cricket!
