The 38 -year -old then saw Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis pressing a switch with his father and mother, who picked up the veil from the Rohit Sharma stand, with colored fireworks and a shower of conflict.
Rohit’s wife, Ritika stood with her pride and satisfaction with a wide smile in the moment.
Apart from Rohit, former India captain Ajit Wadkar, and former-BCCI president Sharad Pawar were also honored with donating his name.
For Rohit, it was a moment that he had dreamed since childhood, mentioned in the same breath as some huge names of Indian cricket.
The core was also dodged.
“What is going to happen today, I never dreamed. As a child growing up, I wanted to play for Mumbai for India. For me my name is among the great people of the game, I cannot express it in words.
“This is also special because I am still playing. I have retired from two formats, but I am still playing a format,” he said.
But for someone who has achieved so much as a cricketer, Rohit expressed another wish.
Rohit said, “When I play the 21st (for Mumbai Indians in IPL) and there will be a stand here, it will be real, it will be special when I represent the country here.”
Rohit has already retired from T20Is and has tested cricket after serving the nation.
It was also special for him because Wankhede was a place that shaped his cricketing dreams.
Rohit said, “I have never seen in my dream what is going to happen today. You try to get a lot of milestones, but something is really special, because Wankhede is a prestigious stadium and a lot of memories are made here.”
He said, “Special thanks to Pawar Saheb and Devendra Fadnavis for making it very special, it is a very special day,” he said.
But the former Indian captains soon slipped into the self of his progress, knowing that Mumbai Indians have to seal IPL playoff berths so far.
He said, “My special team MI is also here, waiting for my speech to end and start training.”
Later, his India and MI team partner Suryakumar Yadav paid a shiny tribute to Rohit.
“Congratulations @Rohitsharma45 Getting incredible things on the cricket ground, from finisher to our captain, you are in an inspiration and our pride, every role.
“Very rarely comes a leader who moves from the front, and changes the game for better. You are the leader who has not only changed the game, but also defined the role, attitude, dressing room atmosphere, team, and the role of a captain.
Suryakumar posted on his Instagram account immediately after the inauguration of the stand, “As I have said earlier, good things are with good people, and you deserve it.
On his behalf, Fadnavis said that if the MCA sends a proposal for a new stadium, his government will allot land.
CM said, “Our prestigious batsman, captain and one of my favorite, and who mesmerized with his batting, is present here.”
“If there is a proposal from MCA for a new stadium, we will allocate space to adjust more fans for this,” he said.
