Rohit Sharma’s dream of World Cup 2027 may be in doubt because BCCI ODI prepares for infection

Rohit Sharma will turn 40 by the start of the World Cup 2027 in South Africa.
Rohit Sharma’s dream of playing World Cup 2027 can be a long shot with BCCI, which is planning an infection in the ODI. Sharma retired from the T20I after the T20 World Cup last year and did the same in the tests before the India vs England series. Hit-Man is eyeing the award in South Africa, but perhaps that opportunity cannot be tolerated.
BCCI ODi prepares for infection, Rohit’s ODI future in doubt: report
According to the Hindustan Times report, the BCCI expected Rohit Sharma to retire in all forms of cricket, when he gave up cricket. However, the 38 -year -old surprised one and all with his decision to continue one and all in Odis, with a look at the World Cup 2027. Rohit led Rohit to take men in blue in the final in 2023. He then won India in the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy 2025.
“One more thing. I am not going to retire from this format. Just to ensure that no rumors are going to move forward. Thank you very much,” Rohit had said that India after defeating New Zealand in the final of the CT 2025. He repeated the same in a social media post, announcing his test retirement.
However, BCCI also may not be keen to continue Rohit. The HT report states that when there is no discussion, the chief selector Ajit Aggarkar will be assigned to establish a leadership infection.
“Quite clearly, many of us thought that Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There was no discussion between the selectors on Rohit and his ODI,” A source of BCCI told The Hindustan Times.
Shreyas Iyer joins the Captain Race
India will play 27 Odis before the 2027 World Cup. There is enough time for India to choose and prepare the successor of the tournament in South Africa. MS Dhoni chose Virat Kohli as his successor before the 2017 Champions Trophy. Kohli led the side as a player with Dhoni at the 2019 WC.
Rohit may still facilitate, but the leadership baton can pass Shreyas Iyer. Sharma saw the same in Mumbai Indians, in which Hardik Pandya took over. In the Indian team, Shreyas Iyer could do the same. The Mumbai batter is the only player to lead 3 IPL teams in the final. He also led Mumbai for the Syed Mushtaq Ali title.
“He only plays Odis, but after this IPL we cannot keep him out of T20 international and even testing. Also, he has now officially joined the White-Ball Captain Race,” A BCCI source told the Indian Express.
