Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif questioned Rohit Sharma’s decision to step down as captain for the final test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney earlier this year. Calling it a misunderstanding, he said that the time was over and indicated that the experienced opener has already made up his mind to retire from Test cricket at that time. Rohit struggled in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, which lost 3–1 in India. He took an average of just 6.20 in five innings. His struggle with BAT left himself for a final test at Sydney in Sydney and handed over the reins to Jasprit Bumrah, who inspired India to win 295 runs in a series opener in Perth.

“When we removed ourselves from the early XI in Sydney, we needed to win the team as our batting and the team. I felt that I felt that we needed a captain in that important game.

“Jaspreet Bumrah was appointed as a stand-in skipper, but even he could not complete the game, so raised the question that the form is not there, the form is not there, but you are also a captain.

Rohit declared his retirement from the red-ball format last week, ending his test career, which began in 2013 with the first century against the West Indies in Kolkata, with 4,301 runs with 67 tests with an average 12 centuries of 40.57 and 18 fifty. Rohit led India in 24 tests, won 12 and lost nine games.

In June 2024, Rohit announced his retirement from T20I by defeating South Africa by seven runs to win the 2024 men’s T20 World Cup.

With Rohit announced retirement from trials, Shubman Gill is the front-raner to be the next Test captain, as the Ajit Aggarkar-led selection committee aims to sideline some new blood.
