Dubai: The ICC has announced the Cricket Competition during the South California city of Pomona 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Cricket, which is returning to the Olympics after 128 years, will feature every six teams in men and women’s competitions and will be held in Fairground in Pomona.
The city is located 48 km from Los Angeles, which is the main site of the Games.
Fairground or Fairplex, as it is more popularly known, is a feature used through the year for conferences, and commercial, educational and sports (mainly motorsporte) events. There is no designated cricket ground at the venue.
ICC President J Shah said in a release on Tuesday night, “We welcome the announcement of the venue for cricket in Los Angeles 2028 as it is an important step to prepare for our game return to the Olympics.”
“Although cricket is a very popular sport, it will be a great opportunity to expand traditional borders, when it is a fast book, exciting T20 format in the Olympics that should appeal to the new audience.”
Cricket, which recorded its only presence at the Olympics at the Paris Games in 1900, was included in the Los Angeles Olympic program after the 141st session of the International Olympic Committee in Mumbai in October 2023.
Cricket LA28 joined five new sports, including baseball/softball, flag football, lacros (sixes) and squash.
The T20 format recognized by the ICC as a vehicle for the development of sports has also painted other multi-game events in recent years.
In the Asian Games in 2010, 2014 and 2023, both men and women’s T20 competitions were shown, while Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games staged a women’s competition.
