Players absent from format for 800 days from West Indies Hand Test captaincy

The new World Test Championship (WTC) begins with the new leader for the West Indies!

Despite the fact that Roston Chase has not played in the format since March 2023, the West Indies have taken an adventurous and surprising decision to name him as their new Test captain. Kraigg Brathwaite, who captained the team in 39 Test matches and led it for eight years, was now replaced by Chase, who recently turned 32.

Why was the Krigag Brathwaite replaced?

During the tenure of Brathwaite, while stable, saw the West Indies winning just 10 Tests and finished eighth in all the three editions of the World Test Championship (WTC). His own form with BAT was also submerged in recent times – on an average in 2022 after 62.45, he scored just 846 runs in 17 tests since 2023, with a century with his name. Brathwaite paved the way for a leadership transition earlier this year.

Chase, who has played 49 Tests, takes 2,265 runs and 85 wickets with him. However, their recent form leaves a lot to be desired. Since the beginning of 2020, he has an average of just 17.81 with the bat and has not created a century since February 2019. Their selection, therefore, is less about recent numbers and more about leadership ability.

Why was Roston Chase chosen on CWI?

Cricket West Indies (CWI) insisted that Chase was selected after a rigorous and modern selection process. A shortlist of six candidates undergo psychometric testing, structured interviews and strategic evaluation. Shortlisted candidates were – Tevin Imlach, John Campbell, Joshua Dr. Silva, Justin Greaves and Jomel Vatriculation.

,Each candidate went through a detailed evaluation process including psychometric testing to evaluate overall suitability for leadership style, behavior and role, as well as a strategic approach, communication skills and structured interviews on team cultureRead a release from CWI.

,This selection process is one of the most broad and forward thinking that we have done, ” CWI president Kishore Uthale said“I am deeply influenced by professionalism, fairness and strategic thinking that shaped the final decision. It sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket.,

“I fully support this appointment,” the new head coach Deran Sammy said. “Our new captain has earned the honor of his comrades, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown us the leadership qualities to take this team forward.,
