As Punjab Kings scramble to finalize the squad before the IPL 2025 resumes on 17 May, they got a shot in hand. Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen has joined PBK, by digging PSL 2025. Owen should have joined PBK after completing its PSL assignment. However, he has decided not to return for the remaining match in favor of IPL.
Owen played 8 matches for Peshawar Zalmi, scoring 102 runs at an average of 14.57. He also took two wickets. While Peshawar is ranked 6th on the PSL points table, they are still in the playoff race. But with Owen PSL pulling out of PSL, it will be a blow to Peshawar’s playoff aspirations. Owen is not the first player to dig PSL for IPL, however. Corbin Bosch became the first player to join Mumbai Indians despite contracting in PSL. He received a 1 -year suspension from PSL to break the contract.
Boost for Punjab Kings
Since the IPL was suspended on May 10 after extending the military conflict between India and Pakistan, foreign players left both countries. Now, as the IPL resumes, the uncertainty on the availability of Marcus Stoinis, Xavier Bartlet, Josh English and Aaron Hardy becomes bigger. In such a situation, the arrival of Owen will promote the side. PBK is just one win from qualifying for IPL playoffs after 11 long years. Punjab is third on the IPL points table with 15 points out of 11 matches.
While domestic stars of PBKS have exceptionally well performed under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, they need a person like Mitchell Owen to promote further opportunities. PBK has three matches left in the league stage.
However, PBK will beware of Owen’s inexperience. Explosive Australian all-rounder did not perform well on slow pitches. With the PBKS taking its base to Jaipur for the remaining matches, it can be a major challenge for Owen if the matches are played on slow surfaces at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
Who is Mitchell Owen?
The 23 -year -old Tasmanian all -rounder took the Big Bash League (BBL) from the storm last season for the Hobart storm. Owen’s explosive batting and right -handed bowling gave the storm a lead. He scored 452 runs in 11 matches, an average blistering strike rate of 45.20 and 203.60. He topped the BBL chart with two centuries.
Owen’s defined moment against Sydney Thunder came to the BBL final on January 27, 2025. The young man broke the centenary of 39 balls- the fastest in BBL history. He scored 108 runs in 42 balls with 11 sixes, leading to the storm to reach his first title. His 16 -ball fifty set a final record, giving him a match player. Earlier, his unbeaten 101 off 64 balls against Perth Scormers demonstrated his power-touching provases.
