Former Sri Lanka off-spinner Sachitra Senanayake has be been indicted by the Hambantota High Court for trying to the get a fellow player for match-fixing, during the 2020 LPL. As per the Attorney General’s Department, this is first such incident of an indictment, of a former international player, under the anti-corruption law.
Interestingly, Sachitra Senanayake was arrested and then later released in 2023. As far as his record is concerned, he went on to play a solitary Test, 49 ODIs, and 24 T20Is for the Sri Lanka team. In them, he went on to pick 78 wickets overall. In fact, he was part of the 2014 T20 World Cup-winning side, that had beaten India in the final.
If reports in Sri Lanka are to be believed, Senanayake approached Tharindu Ratnayake, who played for Colombo Kings. “Senanayake is also alleged to have contacted two other cricketers participating in the inaugural LPL in 2020 via telephone from Dubai, attempting to persuade them to engage in match-fixing,” a report in the Sri Lankan ‘Daily Mirror’ stated.
Meanwhile, the bowler in question had played a season in IPL too — back in 2013 for KKR, where in 8 matches, he went on to pick 9 wickets. In fact, he was a regular in the T20 leagues around the world, while playing last for the national side back in 2016.
