Josh Hazlewood turned out to be too hot for West Indies batters to handle as he wreaked havoc on the hosts to help Australia clinch a 159-run win in 1st Test. The visitors managed to win the Barbados Test within 3 days into what was a controversy filled contest. After losing the WTC final to South Africa, Pat Cummins and co. have now commenced their next cycle on a victorious note.
West Indies no match for Hazlewood, Australia
Australia had a shaky start to their 2nd innings but it was their middle-order batters who saved the team’s face. Travis Head (61), Beau Webster (63) and Alex Carey (65) slammed half-centuries each to power the visitors to 310 runs at the end of their 2nd innings. Valuable runs were added by tailenders Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon and Hazlewood towards the end to hand Australia the advantage.
Australia tasted early success with the ball as Starc got rid of opener Brathwaite in the very first over. And then, it was Hazlewood’s turn to show his magic. The pacer ran through the West Indies top and middle order, getting rid of Campbell, Chase, King and Carty in quick succession.
Tailender Shamar Joseph (44) attempted to put up a late fight but failed to hold his fort as he fell victim to Lyon. Hazlewood finished the game with his 13th five-wicket-haul as Australia thrashed West Indies by 159 runs.
The game was filled with controversies, with third umpire Adrian Holdstock making some controversial decisions on Day 2. At least four decisions went against West Indies, forcing head coach Darren Sammy to wonder if the official had anything against the team.
Travis Head was named the Player of the Match for his handy 59 and 61-run knocks that turned out to save Australia from perilous positions.
