Former Indian cricket team spinner R Ashwin believes that the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will cause a major ‘leadership vacuum’ in the upcoming test series against England. Virat announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday – a few days after Rohit’s similar decision. As a result, BCCI selectors now have the responsibility of selecting the captain of the next Indian cricket team. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Jasprit Bumrah captained the side in Rohit’s absence. While some media reports claimed that Shubman Gill is a top contender for the job, Ashwin believes Bumrah is entitled to captaincy, but eventually left the decision with the selectors.
“I didn’t have the idea of both [Rohit and Kohli] Will retire together, “Ashwin said on his YouTube show ‘Ash Ki Butt’.” This will be a test time for Indian cricket, and I would say that it is actually the beginning of Gautam Gambhir era. ,
“The team visiting England will be a completely new team, a converted team where Bumrah will probably be the most player. He is clearly one of the captaincy options; I think he is entitled to captaincy, but the selectors will take a decision based on their physical ability.”
While reflecting Rohit and Virat’s decision to retire, Ashwin felt that the pair is still enough to present Indian cricket more in their tanks. He believes that when India line up England in five high-dot tests in Headingly from June 20, the inexperienced touring party will remember Virat’s energy and Rohit’s creation.
He said, “His retirement will definitely create a leadership vacuum. You cannot buy experience, especially on such tours. Virat’s energy and Rohit’s composition will be remembered,” he said.
“Testing has been the best [format for India] In the last 10–12 years, but only for leadership, Rohit should have been played until the England range, and if he performs, he can move forward and give some more leadership. ,
