“It’s very upset that he will not get captaincy”: India team selection about Bumrah about R Ashwin’s bomb

As a debate and discussion on India’s next Test Captain’s choice of continuing the choice of continuing the next Test Captain, the legendary former India spinner R Ashwin has made his feelings clear about the matter. Ashwin, who retired from all forms of cricket at the end of 2024, has talked about the race for captaincy, which has opened after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket. According to sources, 25-year-old batsman Shubman Gill has been made the captain for India’s upcoming tour of England, ahead of the veteran Pesar Jasprit Bumrah, who was the vice-captainment during Rohit’s time as the captain.

According to reports, Gill is to be selected beyond Bumrah, which is due to pre -age and later fitness concerns.

However, Ashwin, who has been a partner of the team of both players for many matches, has expressed his disappointment on the fact that Bumrah will not be given captaincy.

Speaking on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Butt’, Ashwin said, “I am very upset and disappointed that Jasprit Bumrah will not get captaincy (India). I think he is a national treasure.”

“I was very happy when he became the captain, but I think it’s out of the window,” Ashwin further said.

Bumrah captained India in the first three Tests, won one and lost two. In particular, Bumrah led India for his only win in the 2024–25 border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia in Australia.

Ashwin raised a point that the captain should always be a person who has an automatic entry in the side -playing XI, and another name was thrown into the cap.

“There are clear choices, but I want to throw in another name too – Ravindra Jadeja,” said Ashwin.

Ashwin said, “There is always news of who will be made the captain or vice-captain, but they should be named in the team’s playing XI first. He should be an automated selection.”

Shubman Gill was made the vice-captain of India in white-ball formats in some series in 2024, indicating that he was in the selectors’ plans for long-term captaincy. However, Gill has never been given the role of leadership in Test cricket. Even when Bumrah was unable to the ground and did not play XI in India’s final test against Rohit Australia, it was Virat Kohli, and not Gill, who took over as a stand-in captain.

However, while Bumrah was named the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year in 2024, Gill has not yet boasted a large number of an average of 35 after trials, the format.
