Islanders F Matt Martin join the front office, retiring after 16 season

Forward Matt Martin, who spent two out of his 16 NHL season with New York Islands, retired on Tuesday and was named a special assistant for General Manager Matthew Darche.

Martin, 36, made two assistance and 82 hits for the islands in 32 matches in the previous season, who selected him in the fifth round of the 2008 NHL draft. He played a brief two-year term in New York with Toronto Maple Leafs (2016-18) in his years.

For his career, Martin recorded 178 points (81 goals, 97 aid), 1,168 penalty minutes and 3,931 hits in the 987 regular-season games. He also had 13 points (eight goals, five aids) in 88 playoff games.

Martin led the league in the hits for five consecutive sessions (2011-16) and is second in NHL history in that category behind former team partner Cal Cloterbuck (4,029).

The islanders, who went to 35–35–12 (82 points) and missed the playoffs last season, the 2025 draft has the number 1 pick, which begins on Friday.
