Indy 500 runner-up Marcus Ericsson was punished, now 31st

Indycar announced punishment for three drivers and their teams on Monday in the Indianapolis 500 of Sunday, which included runner-up Marcus Ericsson Dropping at 31st.

Ericsson’s Andhreet’s global team partner Kail Kirkwood, who finished sixth, was ranked 32nd, and the British driver of Prema Racing, Column Ilot, was dropped from 12th to 33rd and final.

Indycar said in a statement that Ericsson and Kirkwood’s number 27 and 28 cars were found to have illegal amendments in the cover of their energy management system. In the case of Ilot, his number 90 car did not meet the minimum endplate height and location specification.

Ericsson, a Sweda, who won the 2022 Indianapolis 500, gained late in the Sunday race, before Spain’s Alex Palu passed her on her way to win his first Indie 500 0.6822 seconds.

Penalty means that David Malukas of AJ Foet Racing is now credited to finish second. Mexico’s Pato O’Arce (Arrow McCalen) finished third, Sweden’s Felix Rousnakwist (Mayor Shank Racing) was in fourth place and Santino Ferusi (AJ FOT) moved to the fifth place.

Penked drivers should seize their prize money and championship points from their original finish. They are allowed to appeal for punishment.
