Former India selector Dilip Vengsarkar reacted to Virat Kohli’s retirement decision. Vengsarkar, who chose Kohli in the test side during his time, spoke on the star batter’s ability to win the match on his own. Kohli’s decision to hang his Test boots ended a magnificent 14 -year -old career, which saw him dominating the format both as a batsman and captain. Speaking to the Indian Express, Vengsarkar suggested that Kohli should retire after the upcoming tour of England, but admitted that it was a call from the former captain of India at the end of the day.
“I am surprised by Virat Kohli’s decision to retire especially because Big England are visiting in June. I think he (Virat) should have been played against England. It is a five -match test chain in his backyard, a big chain. A big chain. A big chain. He could play the entire series and then call it a day.
“He had a great, excellent innings. He developed into a player after each series and each year, a true match-monkey.”
Vengsarkar, along with the retirement of India captain Rohit Sharma, also said that BCCI selectors would be difficult to find their replacement despite the talented pool of the batsmen.
“Rohit Sharma and Virat will leave a big zero. I am sure that there are players in the team who now want to grab the opportunity in England’s tour because I believe there is quality in the squad. The flip side of retirement by these two players is that others will get an opportunity to establish themselves. Virat and Rohit’s contribution is very big and remember for a long time.
He said, “Now with two modern great services, it is a good opportunity for those on the bench. India’s bench strength is strong with a good domestic structure, but it will be a hard call for selectors to find men who can fill the shoes of Virat and Rohit.”
