India may be the ODI captain as the successor of Shreyas Iyer, Rohit Sharma on the BCCI radar for the T20 World Cup.

Shreyas Iyer has not played T20I for India since December 2023 and has been out of the test setup since February 2024. They are never considered as vice-captains before.
Shreyas Iyer’s career can be split into two halves. Before and after being removed from BCCI’s central contract in February 2024. In the period before, it had shown glimpses of brilliance.
Yes, the ODI World Cup campaign was great but neither his Test nor T20I record was great. After getting chucked away, he’s unleashed himself. We saw a fearless and aggressive version of Shreyas Iyer in the IPL 2024 season. But that was just the start.
Shreyas Iyer’s career turnaround
In the next Ranji Trophy season, Shreyas averaged 68.57 and he also hit a double hundred. His career average isn’t even 50. He averaged 50 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with a 188 strike rate. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he was dismissed just once in 5 matches and scored 325 runs at a 131.58 strike rate.
Then came the Champions Trophy, where Shreyas was India’s best batter. Ahead of the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. And in IPL 2025, he was one of the best batters as well. It’s been such a rise that several were angered when BCCI didn’t include them in India’s Test squad for England.
Back in the T20I & Test team?
And the BCCI can’t overlook him anymore. Shreyas hasn’t played a T20I match since December 2023. Well, that’s about to change. He’s now led KKR to a trophy and Punjab Kings to their second IPL final. And has performed incredibly with the bat. With the T20 World Cup 2026 approaching, he has a strong chance to return to the Indian T20I setup.
“Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests,” a BCCI source told Indian Express.
In line to be Rohit Sharma’s successor
But that isn’t all. Shreyas has also officially joined the captaincy race. He has shown what he can do as captain in the IPL and for Mumbai as well. He was easily the best captain in IPL 2025, overtaking even MS Dhoni. And since Rohit Sharma is nearing the end of his career as India’s ODI captain, the BCCI might consider Shreyas as his successor.
“Plus, he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” the source added.
