Shubman Gill’s swift rise to India’s Test captaincy has apparently caused some discontent among influential figures in Indian cricket. The speed of his ascension, particularly given Jasprit Bumrah’s name was being floated for the role just months ago, has raised some eyebrows. Despite his impressive track record, the timing of Gill’s promotion seems to have taken a few aback.

Shubman Gill not unanimous choice as Indian captain?

Sources suggest even some board powerbrokers weren’t initially on board with the decision, though a recent extended meeting with head coach Gautam Gambhir appears to have sealed Gill’s fate as India’s new red-ball leader. A PTI report indicates that the decision to anoint Gill wasn’t unanimous. It required persuasion and reassurance to key stakeholders. The final nod seemingly came after Gambhir met Gill in Delhi, ending Jasprit Bumrah’s chances.

Jasprit Bumrah not in fray now

At the beginning of the year, many believed Jasprit Bumrah would become India’s next Test captain after Rohit Sharma. He received strong support from cricket legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Anil Kumble, and R. Ashwin. Bumrah even led India to a win in Perth when Rohit missed the match for the birth of his child. He was again made captain for the Sydney Test after Rohit stepped down due to poor form.

But on January 4 in Sydney, Bumrah hurt his back and couldn’t play the rest of the fifth Test match. He was later ruled out for several months, missing both the ICC Champions Trophy and the start of IPL 2025. This injury—and his history of getting injured often—made selectors question if it was wise to give him the extra responsibility of captaincy.

Shubman Gill the new leader?

On the other hand, Shubman Gill has always been seen as a future star. He is a stylish batter and has already shown leadership skills by captaining Gujarat Titans in the IPL and serving as vice-captain in limited-overs cricket.
