Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh supported the number 3 batsman to Sai Sudharsan, while Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion also questioned
Former India cricket team spinner Harbhajan Singh has thrown his weight behind Sai Sudharsan to be India’s new number 3 batter in Tests. The Tamil Nadu batter has earned his maiden Test call-up for the upcoming five-match series against England. Ahead of the 1st Test at Headingley, Bhajji pointed out that Sudharsan would be the best man for the role.
Sudharsan India’s new no.3?
Speaking on the sidelines of Vidarbha Cricket League, Harbhajan pointed out that Sudharsan has been in stellar form off late. He noted that not only was he a left-handed batter but also had an impressive IPL 2025 season where he finished as the leading run-getter. However, it remains to be seen if Sudharsan will get a chance in the 1st Test.
“In my opinion, Sai Sudharsan should play at No.3. He’s a left-hander, in top form, and just came off a very impressive IPL. His technique is sound, and I believe he could be the solution at that position,” Harbhajan said.
Why no Iyer?
Harbhajan echoed sentiments similar to that of former India captain Sourav Ganguly over Shreyas Iyer’s absence in the squad. Despite consistent performances across formats, both international and domestic, the Mumbai batter was left out of the squad for the series against England. Harbhajan said that he would have picked Shreyas if he was a selector, while also noting that Agarkar and co. could possibly not be seeing him as a red-ball player at the moment.
“Shreyas Iyer is a very fine player. He’s proven himself in ODIs, performed in the World Cup, Champions Trophy, and IPL. So yes, he should’ve been in the squad. But maybe the selectors don’t see him as a red-ball player right now. If I were part of the selection committee, I would have considered him. But this is not the end — his journey is long, and he might even be a future ODI captain. One missed tour doesn’t mean his career is over,” Harbhajan added.
