Gill claims that England is bigger than the IPL winning Test series

India cricket team captain Shubman Gill reckons that winning the upcoming Test series in England is bigger than winning the IPL. The five-match Test series that commences on Friday will be the Gujarat Titans skipper’s first assignment as Indian captain after the departure of Rohit Sharma. Ahead of the 1st Test in Leeds, Gill emphasized on the importance of winning Test series in overseas.

“Winning in England is bigger”

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Gill said that the oppounity to come to England as a captain doesn’t come very often and that winning the Test series would be a big deal for him. He pointed out that IPL came every year and hence they could have a crack at it regularly. Gill summed up his vision by stating that winning a Test series in SENA nations was always bigger than winning the IPL.

“Definitely the Test series, in my opinion. You don’t get many opportunities as a captain to be able to come to England, maybe two; if you are the best of your generation, maybe three. And IPL comes every year, and you get to have a crack at it every year. So in my opinion, winning a Test series in England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa is bigger,” Gill said.

Talking about IPL, Gill managed to help GT finish 4th on the points table. The one-time champions were knocked out by Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator.

The Test series against England will be Gill’s first assignment as red-ball captain. His job won’t be easy as he will have the additional responsibilty as captain apart from focusing on his own batting. Gill will be hoping to improve his record in England, given that he has only managed to score 88 runs in six Tests played in the UK.
