Gautam Gambhir returns to India due to family emergency

Gautam Gambhir has returned to India just before the start of the England test series due to a family emergency.
India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has flown back to India ahead of the India vs India A practice match and the start of the England Tests. The former Indian cricketer had travelled to the UK along with the Indian team last week. Gambhir was leading Gil and co. in an intense training camp at the Kent County Cricket Club in Beckenham to help the unit prepare for the five-match Test series.
Gambhir returns to India
As per RevSportz, Gambhir flew back home after his mother reportedly suffered a heart attack. The head coach’s mother is currently in the intensive care unit (ICU), the report added. With the series scheduled to commence from June 20, it remains to be seen when Gambhir will rejoin the side.
India under Gambhir in Tests
The series against England will mark Gambhir’s 4th Test tour as coach. He replaced Rahul Dravid in 2024 after the latter’s tenure came to an end following the T20 World Cup. He started his stint on a victorious note as India managed to whitewash Bangladesh at home. However, Rohit Sharma and co. were handed a 3-0 defeat by New Zealand followed by a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Gambhir will now take up his next assignment in England. Meanwhile, India enters a new era under captain Shubman Gill following Rohit Sharma’s retirement.
