Former IPL spot -fixing accused, Andket Chavan appointed Mumbai’s U -14 coach

Enkiit Chawan was a growing all-rounder in the domestic circuit, when his career was cut off by IPL spot-fixing allegations.

In a move that has surprised many, the Mumbai Cricket Association has named Ankeet Chavan as the new head coach of the U-14 team. For the unversed, Chavan was once banned for his involvement in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing case. He, along with Ajit Chandila and S Sreesanth had faced the punishment.

Meanwhile, in 2021, his ban was reduced to seven years, which meant he could return to cricket finally. After ending his tenure in 2023, he took to coaching, after playing 18 FC games for Mumbai, and also 20 List A games, plus 13 IPL matches for RR. While playing club cricket, he passed the Level 1 coaching exam too.

In an interview with The Indian Express, Chavan said, “This is a second innings for me, and I am eagerly looking forward to it. There is always a chance to make a comeback in life. I want to thank the Mumbai Cricket Association for putting their faith in me. Coaching has always been on my mind, and I am aware of the challenges that lie ahead. At the Under-14 level, I want to focus on developing the players’ basic techniques to help them improve their game.”

On the other hand, Mumbai will continue to be coached by Omkar Salvi, who was also the bowling coach for RCB this year. Also, Sandeep Patil has been retained as the chairman of selection committee.
